Ernst muss man sein!

Oscar Wilde betrachtete sein kurz vor seiner Verhaftung wegen Unzucht 1895 uraufgeführtes Stück „The Importance od being Earnest – Bunbury“ als seine beste Komödie. Geistreich und ironisch attackiert er in dem Verwirrspiel um das Lieben und Werben der beiden Gentleman Algernon und Jack um ihre Auserwählten Gwendolen und Cecily die Oberschicht im viktorianischen England.

Gwendolyn: My ideal has always been to love some one of the name of Ernest. There is something in that name that inspires absolute confidence.

Wilde created this farcical comedy in the late 19th century shortly before being sentenced to emprisonnement on cause of homosexual conduct. The play deals with the late Victorian rigid social conventions which is here threaten by an undeniable triviality used as a satirical tool to undermine such unyielding seriousness. Comical intrigues and witty dialogues makes for an eventful romantic game of who’s who in which the most earnest of them all might or might not win the top honours.
